Victoria Gershuni, Sarah Lambeth, Daniel Niku and Kristin Webb University of Southern California The growing complexity of the politically and technologically driven practice of allopathic medicine has led many medical patients to investigate and invest more into holistic medical practices. This, combined with the use of holistic practices among generations of immigrants to the United States, has created a growing need for the incorporation of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) into Americas healthcare system. This paper argues that Complementary and Alternative Medicine should be included in President Barack Obamas national healthcare plan. The inherent focus on prevention in holistic medicine has the potential to decrease healthcare costs by relieving a portion of the financial burden for insurance companies, medical facilities, and patients. By incorporating CAM into Americas mainstream allopathic medical treatment, we can increase the efficacy of medical services and help reduce adverse reactions by improving doctor-patient communication about the use of alternative medicine. When CAM is fully incorporated into biomedical practice, alternative medicine will be more accessible to the general population, rather than primarily to those of higher socioeconomic status. Ultimately, due to increased globalization it is necessary to recognize and to acculturate CAM into Americas healthcare system.
